7 Elements To Cape Cod Style

cape cod style elements

With the reveal of the fabulous HGTV Home 2015, I wanted to share my thoughts on how to infuse the cape code style into the home. Let’s face it, our chances of winning this gorgeous home are like finding a needle in the haystack. And, if we did win, who could really afford keeping it? But, we can make our own homes beautiful with a few key elements and a bit of creativity.

With that-here are my 7 elements to cape code style.

FLOOR

Hardwood floors or whitewashed wood floors ground the space. If hardwood floors are not in your budget, there are some very high-end looking laminate floors that would give you the same look. And, with some handyman skills installation can be done by you, the homeowner. Natural fiber rugs are very durable and add that textural element to the home. Plus, when you have open space such as in this photo, the rug will define the separate spaces.

WALLS

Tone-on-tone whites and creams give that airy and spacious feel. The natural light bounces off the walls, showcasing the fresh and clean palette. Having the walls painted in a crisp, clean shade will brighten the mood on gloomy days and become your blank canvas for accents to ‘pop’.

LIGHTING

In the photo above, credit to Cuckoo4design, the chandelier is definitely a statement piece. The chandelier is light and airy within that massive ceiling height. Now, chandeliers can be pricey. It is nothing to find a beautiful light fixture like this running in the $800-$1,000 range. Peruse around Craigslist  for a chandelier that will fit your room dimensions. Freshen it up with spray paint or even Annie Sloan chalk paint and distress. You will have an instant cape code style light fixture for pennies compared to what is shown.

ACCENTS

Subtle sea-themed accessories, antiques, and wicker are ways to pull the entire cape cod style together. If you don’t have a ton to spend on accessories, throw pillows are one of the easiest updates for low-cost impact. Mix the old with the new-vintage pieces and salvage elements add character to the space. Bring in objects that have meaning to you. Perhaps, a seashell from the beach you and your family visited last summer could be framed and hung on the wall. This will bring personality to the space with your unique touches.

COLORS

Embrace color. Paint is one of the simplest ways to bring the beauty of the outdoors in. If choosing a more vibrant or deeper color on the walls, I would recommend keeping the main staples of the room neutral, as shown here. Painting the trim a crisp, clean white will also bring more light to the space and give a nice contrast to the vibrant paint color.

OUTDOORS

The photo is so welcoming, isn’t it? We all would love to enjoy the outdoors in a space like this. Everyone feels so much better when they can soak up some rays and breath in the fresh air. Creating a cozy, welcoming outdoor space doesn’t have to be a budget breaker. Spray paint your existing patio set or pick up some fresh cushions in neutral tones. Add some simple green plants with colorful blooms that fit the color scheme of your home and that cape code style feel. And, remember..less is more.

SCENTS

Finally, if you just don’t have the budget for any of the above options-just add a new candle. Candles that have a clean scent of fresh linens or a summer rain, when lite can bring all those memories of that vacation at the beach! And even just opening those windows and letting in the summer breeze.
